Basicamente, é necessário alterar o arquivo
/etc/X11/xorg.conf
acrescentando a seguinte linha na Section "Device"
Option "ModeValidation" "NoDFPNativeResolutionCheck"
Depois deixe a Section "Screen" do seguinte jeito:
SubSection "Display"
Depth 8
Modes "1680x1050" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1680x1050" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1680x1050" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
Salve e depois aperte Crtl+Alt+Backspace para reiniciar o ambiente gráfico com as novas configurações
Não testei, mas deve funcionar também com a resolução 1440x900
